How Is the Endometrial Microbiome Different from the Vaginal Microbiome?

September 28, 2026•1 min read

Are They the Same?

For many years, scientists believed the uterus was sterile. We now know that both the vagina and the uterus contain microorganisms, but they are not identical environments.

Researchers are learning that each area of the reproductive tract has its own unique microbiome.

The Vaginal Microbiome

The vaginal microbiome contains billions of bacteria and is often dominated by beneficial Lactobacillus species.

These bacteria help:

🌸 Maintain an acidic environment
🌸 Protect against harmful organisms
🌸 Support reproductive health.

The Endometrial Microbiome

The endometrial microbiome contains far fewer bacteria than the vagina.

Scientists are studying:

🧬 Which bacteria are present
🧬 How these bacteria interact with the immune system
🧬 Whether the microbiome influences implantation and fertility.

Why Does This Matter?

Researchers are investigating whether differences in the endometrial microbiome may be associated with:

✔️ Embryo implantation
✔️ IVF outcomes
✔️ Recurrent implantation failure
✔️ Recurrent pregnancy loss.

More studies are needed, but this is one of the most exciting areas of fertility research.

The Takeaway

The vagina and uterus are connected, but they are not the same environment. Understanding these differences may help researchers better understand fertility and reproductive health.
